Hi Everyone,
The commissioners of the Port of Orcas are discussing the proposed development on the so-called Larson property. This port-owned property is located at the corner of Mt. Baker and North Beach roads.
The commissioners, having determined that a planned GPS approach to runway 16 needs additional clearance from the runway centerline, have proposed constructing several buildings and locating secure auto parking on this property. This would remove current distance and height restrictions and comply with FAA design guidelines. Activation of a GPS approach provides both safety and an economic resolution: 1)it allows for safe IFR (instrument flight rules) approach to the airport and, 2)provides access for commercial carriers who are now restricted from landing at the Orcas Island Airport during those times when weather does not permit operations, currently estimated at 30± days each year, in addition to those days when only partial operations are above IFR minimums.
The commissioners have met during public sessions to compile needs and wants, and to outline such changes they would not consider. Additionally, major stakeholders (commercial carriers, charter operations, freight movers, etc.) met with the commissioners early in January, 2007, to provide information which would aid the commissioners in providing their tenants with adequate and safe facilities, projecting forward through 2025.
